I <3 Agnete.
When I grow up, I want to be friends with Agnete Kjolsrud.
Of all the female rock vocalists on this entire planet, Agnete is by far my absolute favorite for a myriad of reasons. It wasn’t until the inception of Hills of Elysium and my meeting Vibeke that I had ever even heard of Agnete and her now defunkt band, Animal Alpha, but I fell head over musical heels for her instantly. Needless to say, Agnete’s vocals have had a huge influence on me as an artist, and the music of Animal Alpha has served as a significant inspiration for Hills of Elysium as a group.
With massive success in their native Norway and throughout Europe, it was a big surprise that they received little recognition here in the states, and I will be eternally pissed that I never even had the chance to see them perform live during their short existence (2002-2009). I guess that I will have to be satisfied with watching live footage of past shows on youtube until I can finagle a way to trick her into sharing a stage with me someday.
Fortunately, the demise of Animal Alpha did not mean the end of Agnete. In early 2010 Agnete resurfaced with her new project, Djerv, an aggressive, borderline metal trio which has had much success in the first year since its inception. Although I am forever in admiration of Agnete and her unique vocals, I am not yet sold on the new project, but I can’t tell if it’s my ear or my stubbornness that doesn’t quite vibe with Djerv.
Maybe I am just angry at all of my favorite female singers for abandoning their original projects and moving on to new ones without asking me. Maybe I’m afraid that like Jessicka of Jack off Jill and Aimee of Human Waste Project, Agnete too will have left me wanting more of something she’s just damn tired of putting out there. Maybe my only shot of ever hearing my favorite Animal Alpha songs like “Bundy” and “Most Wanted Cowboy” live will be by performing covers of them myself. Maybe someone else feels that way about shitty tracks from theReality EP and I should just shut the fuck up and buy the new Djerv album.
